Are we just seeing bears? The Lake District 'Bigfoot' debate

Right, I've been lurking on this forum for three years and I've finally had enough of the nonsense. Everyone keeps posting blurry photos from the Lake District claiming they've spotted some sort of British Bigfoot, but has anyone considered that we might just be looking at misidentified bears? I know, I know - we don't have bears in the wild here anymore, but there are escaped animals, zoo escapees, and frankly, people are remarkably bad at estimating size and distance.

Before you all crucify me in the replies, hear me out. I'm not saying there's nothing out there. I'm saying that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and "I saw something brown and big moving through trees at dusk" isn't quite there yet. Has anyone done a proper analysis of the alleged footprints? Real casts sent to universities?

Genuinely asking here - I want to believe, but I also want facts.

Fell_Walker_Mike: You clearly haven't been to the fells in winter, mate. I've been hiking those mountains for 20 years and there's something moving around that's not a deer or a fox. The prints I found near Helvellyn were massive - far too large for any known British animal. But sure, let's pretend it's all misidentification. 🙄

DrScienceSkeptic:

"Real casts sent to universities?"
THANK YOU. This is the only sensible thing I've read on this forum in months. The burden of proof lies with the claimants. Until someone produces a verified cast that's been examined by a zoologist, we're just telling campfire stories. Which is fine! But let's not pretend it's science.

CryptidClaire: The Lake District thing is probably not a traditional Bigfoot, you're right. But that doesn't mean there's nothing there. Could be a surviving population of prehistoric hominins, could be something we haven't classified yet. Your "bears" argument actually supports the point that large animals CAN hide in the UK. Why is a bear possible but an unknown primate isn't?

PubScienceNerd: I work in wildlife photography and people are absolutely terrible at judging what they see through trees. Had a woman convinced she'd photographed a panther in Devon last month. It was a black Labrador. A very large black Labrador, but still. Just saying.

NorthernMystery: The real question is: why do these sightings cluster near certain locations? If it's just misidentification, shouldn't we see reports everywhere? Instead we get hotspots - Pennines, Peak District, parts of Scotland. That pattern suggests something, even if it's not what the believers think.
