Anyone else heard footsteps on the stairs at night that just stop at the top?

Yes, absolutely had this in my old house in Ipswich. Every single night around 2-3am, clear as anything, footsteps coming up the stairs - heavy ones, deliberate - and then just dead silence the moment they reached the landing. Never went any further. Never came back down.

What got me was the consistency. Same time, same rhythm, same stopping point. I set up a recorder on the landing for a week straight and caught some genuinely unsettling stuff on a couple of nights, low breathing sounds and what I can only describe as a shuffling right near the top step.

The house was Victorian terrace so obviously theres the whole "old building settling" argument but you know what, I've heard buildings settle. This wasn't that.

Anyone else noticed whether the footsteps seem to follow a specific pattern or does it vary? I'm curious whether the stopping point changes at all in different cases. That detail matters more than people realise when you're trying to work out whats actually going on.
