Yeah this has happened to me a fair few times actually. I do most of my sessions in abandoned buildings around the Midlands and the pattern you're describing - question followed almost immediately by a burst of static - does seem too consistent to just wave off as interference.
The thing I keep coming back to is whether the static itself is the response, or whether something is trying to modulate through the static and just hasn't got the energy or whatever to fully form into something recognisable. I've read a bit about the Frank's Box theory on this and some of it lines up.
What recorder are you using? I switched to a Zoom H1n a while back and the static bursts became more defined, like there was almost a rhythm to them sometimes. Before that on my old Olympus I was getting similar bursts but they sounded flatter somehow.
Would be worth cross referencing your session timestamps with lunar cycles too, had a mate suggest that and honestly the sessions where I got the most activity did cluster around full moon periods, though that could just be confirmation bias on my part.
