Yeah this happens to us fairly regularly. We use a couple of different recorders and they both do it - this weird burst of static right before anything meaningful gets picked up. First few times I assumed it was interference from someone's mobile or something but it kept happening even when we'd all switched to airplane mode.
Not sure what to make of it honestly. Some in our group reckon its the equipment reacting to a drop in EMF, others think its something drawing energy before it communicates. I lean toward the latter but I'm aware that sounds a bit daft written down.
Anyone tracked whether the static bursts correlate with temperature drops? We haven't been rigorous about logging it but I'm starting to think we should be. Would be good to know if other people are seeing a pattern or if its just random kit behaviour we're reading too much into.
