Right, so I've been lurking for about a month now and I reckon it's time I properly introduced myself. I'm Marcus, 34, from Manchester. Work in IT so I'm naturally a bit sceptical about all this stuff - you know, need evidence, peer review, all that nonsense. BUT my mate Dave swears blind he saw something proper weird on Pendle Hill last October, and it got me thinking.

I don't want to be one of those people who just dismisses everything as nonsense. There's clearly something going on that science hasn't fully explained yet. I'm genuinely interested in the methodology here - how do you lot separate the genuine cases from the attention-seekers and the genuinely mental people?

Also, is there a good starter's guide somewhere? I've got a decent camera and a torch but I imagine that's not going to cut it for actual fieldwork.

Welcome to the forums, Marcus! You've got the right attitude - healthy scepticism is exactly what we need more of round here. Too many people believe anything they read on the internet. The genuine investigators (and there are some brilliant ones on here) are always methodical about it.

My advice: stick around, read the location guides, and maybe join one of the organised investigations if you fancy it. You'll learn more from actual fieldwork than from reading threads, trust me.

Marcus, mate, you're gonna fit right in. We've got everything from hardcore believers to outright cynics, and honestly that's what makes this community work. Start with the 'Sightings & Reports' section and look at threads with lots of replies - you'll see the kind of evidence and counter-arguments that separate the wheat from the chaff.

Fair warning though: once you see your first unexplained thing with your own eyes, the scepticism tends to evaporate pretty quick. 😊

Another sceptic! Brilliant. Though I should warn you - most of what you'll find on these forums is either hoaxes, misidentifications, or people who've had too much cider at a country pub. The Pendle Hill story from your mate is probably just a deer or the lights from a car reflecting off something weird. But hey, there's maybe 5-10% of cases that don't have obvious explanations, and that's what makes it interesting.
