WITNESS STATEMENT

The morning of the 9th of February, 1855, began as any other winter morning in Devon — cold, quiet, and draped in a fresh overnight snowfall that had settled in an unbroken white sheet across churchyard walls and thatched rooftops alike. It did not remain quiet for long.

Reverend Thomas Carver, a man not given to fancy by his own repeated insistence, had risen before dawn to tend to his church as was his custom. Moving through the snow-blanketed churchyard in the pale pre-light, he almost missed them entirely. Almost.
